Come and join ESCAP`s series of trainings on housing the urban poor at the 2nd Asia-Pacific Housing Forum, 7-9 September 2009 in Manila, Philippines


Guided by the APHF 2009 theme "Maximizing Urban Poverty Housing Solutions for Greater Results", ESCAP will hold the following participatory training events based on the themes of the Quick Guides for Policy Makers:

A1&2 - Urbanization and Low-income Housing,

A3&4 - Land and Evictions, and

A5 - Housing Finance.


Each of the training events has a two-fold objective:

1) Introduce participants to participatory learning methods and materials available on the regional online research facility www.housing-the-urban-poor.net,

2) Introduce participants to issues relating to housing the urban poor and exchange successful approaches and principles.


Experts contributing to the trainings will include:

Dr. Yap Kioe Sheng, former Chief Poverty Reduction Section, ESCAP;

Father Norberto Carcellar, Executive Director, Philippine Action for Community-Led Shelter Initiatives, Inc. (PACSII;

Ms. Christy Stickney, Director – Housing Finance (Latin America and the Caribbean), Habitat for Humanity International, Costa Rica; and

Mr. Carl Queiros, Program Development Director, Africa & Middle East, Habitat for Humanity International Pretoria, South Africa.


Apart from the ESCAP-led training sessions, the APHF 2009 will also have sessions on housing strategy, housing policy, housing indicators, housing technology, slum redevelopment, housing finance, rethinking emergencies, innovations in water and sanitation etc.
